A Trip to London is a Trip to Paris

Many visitors come to London to experience the history, the architecture, the culture, and the nightlife.  But one can do much more than just visit England on a trip to London.  More than visit the UK.

A few minutes’ walk from the Judd Hotel in Euston is King’s Cross St Pancras.  In 2007 St Pancras – which had been dormant for several years – re-opened as an international train station, with Eurostar services connecting the station to Paris, Brussels, and beyond in around 2 hours.  That’s two hours from door to door.  No need to turn up in advance for check-ins and security lines, no time wasted in duty free halls and departure lounges, and no need to find your gate via a maze of travelators and corridors.  Fastest travel times between the centres of London and Paris will come down to just 2 hours 15 minutes; London – Brussels to 1 hour 51 minutes; and London – Lille will be only 1 hour 20 minutes.

The Eurostar is more environmentally friendly than flying, too.  Independent research commissioned by Eurostar has shown that flying between London and Paris or Brussels generates ten times more carbon dioxide emissions than taking Eurostar. A return flight produces enough CO2 to fill a double-decker bus, while a return rail trip generates only enough CO2 to fill a Mini.

To book tickets for Eurostar, or to find out more information, go to www.eurostar.com , call 08705 186 186 or contact reception at the Judd Hotel.

Pushkin House hosts Space Race talk

Tomorrow evening Pushkin House – an institute for Russian culture – will host The Men Who Fell to Earth: How Russia’s Pilots, Parachutists and Pioneers Won the Space Race

In the 1950s and 1960s Sergei Korolev and the Soviet space programme laid a path to the stars. Now Russia is our only lifeline to the technologies and machines we have put in orbit.

Simon Ings is joined by Doug Millard, Senior Curator of ICT & Space Technology at London’s Science Museum, to trace Russia’s centuries-old obsession with flight.  The talk coincides with 50th anniversary of pioneering space travel by Yuri Gagarin.

Real Ale at the Bree Louise

They are rated by CAMRA members, their pies are award-winning, and they’re within spitting distance of the Judd Hotel.  The Bree Louise is popular with office workers, visitors, and alternative folk alike, and offer a diverse beer, cider, and tequila menu.

An Alladin’s cave of tasty, tasty beer. Go for the one on hand-pump to avoid flat-ness. Can be a struggle to get a seat, but once you’re installed you won’t want to move all night. Staff are nice, people in there always seem happy and pleasant and it’s so close to Euston. Great place, possible my favourite pub in London!

- Gibbsguy, Qype

Best beer pub in London. If you’re not happy with a beer , they will change it without any fuss. Some outstanding offers from small independent brewers which makes every day a beer festival. Just perfect for anyone who wants well priced and top quality variation. If you want Greene King, Bombardier or Courage this is not the place for you.

- Daddio238, fancyapint

Their obscure objects of desire sit in (mainly) barrel form behind the bar: Art Brew Tempest Stout, Dark Star Six Hop, Bateman’s XXXB feature among the ’16 real ales’ promised outside, with New Forest Kingston Black, Ciderniks Dab Hand and Weston’s Country Perry among the ‘eight cask ciders’. There’s also the house brew of Bree Louise organic pilsner and a surprisingly attractive choice of food: burgers made from fresh ground beef, lamb or wild boar; Colston Bassett blue stilton among the cheeses; and, to start, a pâté of the day to go with the warm, rustic bread. There’s also Heinz baked beans.

Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes

A five minute walk from the Judd Hotel, Bloomsbury is an underground bowling venue. But it offers more than just bowling.  There’s a traditional 50s style cafe, a karaoke room, and room for gigs and parties.

Their website states:

Many of our guests comment about the fantastic atmosphere in the venue. This is due to the vibrant mix of people whom we attract but also the care and time our team put into the venue.

Recently upgraded, the venue now has a new sound system, modernised dance floor, and improved lighting.  Open past midnight on most days, the lanes are available to be reserved in advanced or on a walk-in basis.  What a novel way to wind down after a busy day in the city!

Bloomsbury Bowling Lanes are located on Tavistock Square, City of London WC1H 9EU
